BuildKit

· 1 min read · Containers and Orchestration · Tool

BuildKit executes a Dockerfile as a graph of steps, runs independent stages in parallel and reuses cached layers. Buildx is the CLI plugin that drives it and builds images for several architectures at once.

Key concepts #

  • Cache mounts: keep package caches between builds.
  • Secrets: use a credential in a build without leaving it in a layer.
  • Multi-platform: linux/amd64 and linux/arm64.
