---

**HCP Terraform** adds remote state with locking, remote runs, a private module registry, variable sets, access control and policy checks. [OpenTofu](https://www.itwonderlab.com/opentofu/) users often choose an S3 [backend](https://www.itwonderlab.com/terraform-backend/) or another platform instead.

### Key concepts

- **Workspace**: one state with its variables and runs. Not the same as a CLI [workspace](https://www.itwonderlab.com/terraform-workspace/).
- **Run**: a plan and apply executed by the service.
- **Policy as code**: Sentinel or OPA checks.
